ADC Welcomes Kwankwaso, Says Defection Signals Growing Demand for New Leadership in Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially confirmed the defection of former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, into its fold.

In a statement issued by the party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described Kwankwaso’s move as indicative of a broader national sentiment that Nigeria requires responsive leadership capable of addressing citizens’ everyday challenges and driving sustainable development.

The party noted that Kwankwaso’s experience in governance, grassroots mobilisation, and reputation as a unifying figure would significantly enhance its mission to reposition the country.

As part of the development, Kwankwaso is said to have encouraged members of his political base and supporters across the country to align with the ADC, a move expected to further strengthen the party’s expanding coalition.

The event announcing his entry into the party attracted several high-profile political figures, including ADC National Chairman, David Mark, and National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, alongside members of the National Working Committee (NWC).

Also in attendance were notable political actors and presidential hopefuls such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi, as well as other prominent figures including Liyel Imoke and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal.

The ADC stated that the presence of key stakeholders at the event reflects the party’s unity, strategic focus, and growing political strength as preparations gradually build toward future electoral contests.

Quoting the party’s spokesperson, Abdullahi said Kwankwaso’s decision aligns with public expectations for leadership that is both empathetic and accountable.

He added that the former governor’s political influence and capacity to mobilise support across regions position him as a critical asset in the party’s broader vision for national renewal.
