Nigerian Digital News Platforms Attract 1.6 Billion Visits in 2023 — New Data Shows Growing Online Influence

Abuja, Nigeria — A new industry analysis has revealed that Nigeria’s digital news platforms recorded a combined 1.6 billion visits in 2023, highlighting the expanding reach and influence of online media across the country. The findings were published in the RANKED 2023 report, a digital news performance index compiled by SquirrelPR, a media analytics and communications firm.
The report tracked the performance of 80 leading digital news outlets from January to December 2023, spanning multiple content categories. According to the data, the News & Current Affairs segment dominated overall traffic, accounting for roughly 83 per cent of the total visits, or more than 1.3 billion page views over the year.
News & Current Affairs Lead Digital Consumption
In the News & Current Affairs category — reflecting platforms that focus on government, politics, public policy, and national discourse — the most visited sites included well‑established names such as Legit, Punch Online, Vanguard Online, Daily Post and the Opera News App.
This dominance underscores the central role these platforms play in informing public understanding and shaping national conversation in a period marked by socio‑economic and political transitions.
Diverse Interests Across Digital Platforms
Beyond current affairs, the RANKED report also documented significant audience engagement in other digital news categories:
Entertainment & Lifestyle platforms attracted approximately 166 million visits, led by sites such as Linda Ikeji’s Blog, Naijaloaded and Bella Naija.
Business & Finance outlets, including Business Insider Africa, Nairametrics and BusinessDay, garnered around 74.6 million visits.
Technology & Startups news, represented by platforms such as Techcabal, Technext and Techpoint Africa, accounted for about 34.6 million visits.
The distribution of traffic reflects the breadth of online news consumption in Nigeria, extending beyond politics to culture, economy, technology and lifestyle interests.
Rising Stars and Emerging Voices
The report further identified several emerging platforms that posted notable audience growth over the year, even if their visitor volumes remain below the 10 million quarterly mark. These include outlets such as Okay.ng, Truetells Nigeria, Eagles Path, PM Express, Business Hallmark, News Online NG, Newsdirect.ng, New Telegraph Online and Blueprint Online.
Expert Insights: Digital Media’s Growing Role
Commenting on the findings, SquirrelPR co‑founder James Ezechukwu described the rankings as a vital resource for media practitioners and stakeholders seeking insight into competitive trends and audience behaviour. He noted that the report’s data reinforces the strategic relevance of digital news platforms in shaping public discourse, expanding access to information, and influencing consumer decision‑making across sectors.
As internet penetration deepens in Nigeria and mobile connectivity broadens, the digital news ecosystem — spanning serious journalism, business reporting and lifestyle content — is increasingly central to national information flows and civic engagement.
