FMBN Board Chairman Nasiru Gawuna Resigns Amid Anticipated Political Defection

Abuja, Nigeria
The Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), Nasiru Gawuna, has resigned from his position, a move widely seen as a precursor to an imminent political defection ahead of unfolding developments in Kano State.
Gawuna, who previously contested the Kano State governorship election under the All Progressives Congress (APC), tendered his resignation in a letter dated March 27, 2026, stating that it takes immediate effect.
In the letter, he explained that his decision was in line with a directive issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which requires political appointees intending to participate in electoral processes to vacate their offices.
According to him, the action complies fully with the provisions of the Electoral Act, which mandates such resignations ahead of political participation.
Meanwhile, sources with knowledge of the development indicate that Gawuna has finalised plans to realign politically with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a key political figure in Kano State.
He is expected to formally declare his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the coming days, a move that could reshape political alignments in the state ahead of future elections.
The development underscores the growing wave of political repositioning across party lines as stakeholders begin early preparations for upcoming electoral contests.
