Tinubu Commits Salaries to New Military Welfare Fund, Seeks Nationwide Support

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the creation of a special welfare fund aimed at supporting members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, particularly those wounded in active service and the families of fallen military personnel.

The President unveiled the initiative on Sunday as part of activities marking his 74th birthday, dedicating the gesture to honour the courage, sacrifice, and commitment of Nigerian troops safeguarding the nation’s peace and security.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu has directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to establish a dedicated account to manage the fund. The scheme is designed to provide targeted financial assistance to injured service members, as well as widows, widowers, and children of fallen soldiers.

In a personal show of commitment, the President pledged to donate all his salaries since assuming office as the initial contribution to the fund. The move, he said, underscores the need to ensure that those who have paid the price for Nigeria’s security are not neglected.

President Tinubu also called on state governors, members of the National Assembly, the private sector, and well-meaning Nigerians to support the initiative, noting that further operational details of the fund will be made public in due course.

He stressed that caring for members of the Armed Forces and their families is not an act of charity, but a national duty, adding that the initiative is rooted in a collective obligation to stand by those who risk their lives for the country.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel, ensuring that their sacrifices are met with dignity, sustained care, and institutional support, regardless of existing insurance provisions.
