Kaduna–Abuja Rail Service Disrupted After Train Collision Leaves Hundreds Stranded

Hundreds of passengers were left stranded on Monday after a train operating on the Kaduna–Abuja rail corridor reportedly collided with another train along the track, causing major disruption to services on one of Nigeria’s busiest railway routes.

The incident occurred during the early hours of the day when a passenger train travelling from Kaduna toward Abuja encountered another train on the same line. The collision forced the train to halt abruptly, leaving travellers stuck on the route as railway authorities assessed the situation.

Passengers on board described the moment as frightening, noting that the train suddenly jerked to a stop after the impact. Many commuters remained stranded for several hours while officials worked to address the disruption and restore movement along the corridor.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) later confirmed that a train incident occurred on the Abuja–Kaduna line. According to the agency, some passengers sustained injuries and were promptly attended to and taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

The NRC explained that the accident was linked to a mechanical issue involving a locomotive coupling that resulted in contact with the passenger coach behind it. Following the incident, the affected locomotive and coach were removed to allow the train to continue its journey.

Despite the disruption, authorities stated that the train eventually proceeded to the Idu Train Station in Abuja, arriving behind schedule after emergency response measures were carried out.

Railway officials have assured passengers that safety remains a priority and that further investigations will determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Kaduna–Abuja railway remains one of the most heavily used passenger rail routes in Nigeria, linking the Federal Capital Territory with Kaduna State and serving thousands of commuters daily.
