INEC’s Stance on ADC Sparks Outcry as Melaye Alleges Plot to Stifle Opposition

A former Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Sen. Dino Melaye, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu is more interested in retaining power without a democratic contest ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Melaye made the assertion during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief programme, where he criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the nation’s electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to him, recent political developments suggest an attempt to undermine democratic processes in the country.

“President Bola Tinubu wants to be coronated; he doesn’t want an election. He wants us to practise a monarchical system of government,” Melaye said.

He further alleged that the APC had become increasingly desperate in the face of what he described as a growing opposition force.

“The APC has become so desperate, seeing that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is the only opposition in Nigeria capable of challenging them in 2027,” he added.

Melaye’s comments come amid controversy surrounding INEC’s recent decision not to recognise a faction of the ADC reportedly led by former Senate President, David Mark.

The development has generated mixed reactions from political stakeholders, with some expressing concerns over the implications for opposition politics and internal party democracy.

Melaye argued that the decision could weaken opposition parties and limit the choices available to Nigerians in future elections.

However, INEC has maintained that its actions are guided strictly by the provisions of the law and internal party compliance with electoral regulations.
