INEC Officially Recognises Wike‑Backed PDP Leadership Amid Party Rift

INEC has recognised the Wike‑aligned leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), listing Abdulrahman Mohammed as National Chairman ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally recognised the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as the authentic national leadership of the opposition party.

The electoral body updated its official records on Monday to reflect the leadership structure of the Wike‑aligned National Working Committee (NWC), with Abdulrahman Mohammed listed as the party’s National Chairman, following the national convention held at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

At the convention, party delegates dissolved the previous caretaker committee and selected the new leadership by consensus. INEC’s official publication of the list of executives signals endorsement of this leadership hierarchy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The PDP remains divided into rival factions, with the group led by Kabiru Turaki seeking to stop the convention via a Supreme Court suit. However, the commission’s recognition gives legal standing and official status to the Wike-backed leadership — a development that could alter internal power dynamics as the party seeks unity and readiness for future polls.
