The victim, identified as 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, was reportedly shot during a police operation on April 26, 2026, by operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command.
Confirming the development, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the officer’s conduct, describing it as a serious violation of police operational procedures and professional ethics.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Command disclosed that the operation was based on intelligence reports indicating that the suspect was attempting to transport a firearm.
According to the statement, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his weapon in contravention of Force Order 237, resulting in the death of the suspect.
The Command said the officer has since been arrested, issued a formal query, and transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he is expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for further investigation and possible prosecution.
“The Command reaffirms its zero tolerance for extra-judicial conduct and remains committed to upholding human rights, professionalism, and accountability,” the statement said.
The police action follows the circulation of a disturbing viral video showing the victim restrained with his hands tied behind his back, pleading with officers to spare his life moments before he was allegedly shot.
In the footage, the suspect was heard begging repeatedly, saying: “Officer, I beg, I will tell you everything… I don’t know anything… please.”
Witnesses and online reports allege that the suspect was first shot in the leg before being fatally shot at close range while still restrained.
The graphic nature of the footage has generated intense public anger, with civil society groups and human rights advocates demanding justice for the deceased and stricter sanctions against officers involved in extrajudicial actions.
Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu described the incident as “a live execution,” insisting that the authorities must conduct an open and credible investigation.
“He wasn’t fighting, he wasn’t running—he was begging for his life. But he was silenced,” Gwamnishu said.
He also warned against any attempt to manipulate the facts or shield those responsible, stressing that justice must be served transparently.
Commissioner Oyeniyi extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that the police command would not protect any officer found guilty of misconduct.
“We are fully committed to ensuring justice is served,” the police commissioner said, urging residents to remain calm while investigations continue.
The Delta State Police Command reiterated that law enforcement must remain grounded in the principles of legality, accountability and respect for human dignity, warning that any officer found to have violated these principles would face the full weight of disciplinary action.
The incident has once again reignited the debate over police brutality and the urgent need for institutional reforms within Nigeria’s policing system, as citizens continue to demand accountability in cases involving abuse of force.
