Journalist Kidnapped in Iraq as Security Forces Arrest Suspect, Launch Manhunt
Iraq’s Interior Ministry confirms the abduction of a foreign female journalist, with security forces arresting one suspect and intensifying efforts to rescue the victim.

A foreign journalist has been abducted in Iraq, according to the country’s Ministry of Interior Iraq.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, involved unidentified assailants who reportedly kidnapped the female journalist under circumstances that remain unclear. Authorities have yet to disclose her nationality or the media organisation she represents.
However, the Associated Press, citing two Iraqi security officials who spoke anonymously, reported that the victim may be American, although this has not been independently confirmed.
Reacting to the development, the United States Department of State said it is closely monitoring the situation.
“We are closely tracking these reports,” a spokesperson said, adding that no further details could be released at this time due to privacy considerations.
In a statement, Iraq’s Interior Ministry disclosed that security operatives pursued the kidnappers, leading to an accident in which the suspects’ vehicle overturned while attempting to escape.
According to the ministry, one suspect has been apprehended and a vehicle linked to the crime recovered.
“Security forces were able to arrest one of the suspects and seize one of the vehicles used in the crime,” the statement said, adding that efforts are ongoing to locate other suspects and secure the journalist’s release.
Authorities also assured that all those involved would face legal consequences in accordance with the law.
Investigations into the incident are continuing.
The abduction comes amid heightened security concerns in the region. Following recent military tensions involving the United States and Israel in Iran and neighbouring areas, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad has warned of increased risks to American citizens.
In a recent advisory, the embassy cautioned that terrorist groups within Iraq may attempt kidnappings, noting that “U.S. citizens choosing to remain in Iraq are doing so at significant risk.”
