El-Rufai Returns to Court as Federal High Court Hears Bail Application

Kaduna, Nigeria.

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has returned to the Federal High Court in Kaduna as proceedings commence on his bail application.

The hearing, scheduled for today, marks a key stage in the legal battle involving the former governor, who is facing charges brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

El-Rufai had earlier been arraigned before Justice Rilwan M. Aikawa on a 10-count charge bordering on the alleged conversion and unlawful possession of public property, as well as money laundering.

He was produced in court after spending more than a month in detention, with the matter previously adjourned to March 31, 2026, for the hearing of pending applications, including his request for bail.

However, prior to the court session, the ICPC granted him temporary release on compassionate grounds on March 27, 2026, following the death of his mother, Hajiya Ummar El-Rufai, in Cairo, Egypt.

Today’s proceedings are expected to determine whether the former governor will be granted bail as the trial progresses.
