Boko Haram Attack in Borno: Brigade Commander Among Casualties in Benisheikh Assault

A Nigerian Army brigade commander has reportedly been killed in a Boko Haram attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, raising fresh concerns over insecurity in the North-East.

MAIDUGURI

A senior officer of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier-General O. Braimah, has reportedly been killed following a fresh attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on a military formation in Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State.

The assault, which occurred late Thursday, targeted a base operated by the Joint Task Force in the troubled North-East region, according to local sources and officials.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Kaga Local Government Area, Hon. Zanna Ajimi, said the brigade commander was among those killed during the attack.

“Yes, we just left the military base, and I can confirm that the brigade commander is among the casualties,” Ajimi told reporters.

Heavy Exchange as Troops Engage Insurgents

Sources familiar with the incident disclosed that the insurgents launched a coordinated assault on the military facility, engaging troops in a fierce gun battle.

Although the attack resulted in casualties on the military side, several of the attackers were also said to have been neutralised during the confrontation.

Details of the total number of casualties on both sides were still unclear at the time of filing this report.

Rising Concerns Over Renewed Attacks

The latest development has heightened concerns over the resurgence of insurgent activities in the North-East, particularly in Borno State, which has remained the epicentre of the Boko Haram conflict.

The killing of Brigadier-General Braimah comes months after another senior officer, Brigadier-General Musa Uba, was reportedly killed in a similar attack in the region, underscoring the persistent threat posed by insurgent groups.

Community Reacts to Incident

Residents in the area described the attack as intense, with reports indicating that the insurgents stormed the base in large numbers.

A local resident, who shared details of the incident on social media, expressed grief over the loss of lives, describing the development as tragic.

Security Situation Remains Fragile

Despite sustained military operations in the North-East, sporadic attacks on military formations and civilian communities continue to be recorded, raising questions about evolving tactics by insurgent groups.

Security analysts have repeatedly called for enhanced intelligence gathering, improved coordination among security agencies, and sustained investment in counter-insurgency operations to address the situation.

Awaiting Official Military Statement

As of press time, the Nigerian Army had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

However, the latest attack is expected to trigger renewed military response and strategic reassessment of operations in the region.
