Ogun State CJ Urges Judges to Protect Judicial Integrity Ahead of 2027 Elections
Abuja, Nigeria — The Chief Judge of Ogun State, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, has called on members of the judiciary to uphold the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct as Nigeria approaches the 2027 election cycle, stressing that the credibility of the judicial system depends on public trust in its independence and impartiality.
Justice Dipeolu delivered the appeal during activities marking the 50th anniversary of the Ogun State Judiciary in Abeokuta on Thursday, where she also highlighted the institution’s progress over half a century and the ongoing institutional reforms being pursued.
Integrity and Public Confidence in Justice Delivery
In a statement signed and released after the event, Justice Dipeolu warned judges against conduct that could erode the public’s confidence in the justice system. She urged judicial officers to resist any form of corrupt influence and to protect the sanctity of the judiciary.
“Judges must guard their integrity and the sanctity of the judiciary,” she said, emphasising that justice must remain the moral spine of governance and a steady guardian of societal order.
She also urged political actors to refrain from attempting to influence judicial decisions, particularly in electoral matters, as the country prepares for significant political contests in 2027.
Judicial Transformation and Modernisation
Justice Dipeolu reflected on the evolution of the Ogun State judiciary since its establishment in 1976, noting strides in institutional growth, infrastructure expansion and digital transformation. The current administration has introduced measures such as electronic filing, virtual hearings, e-affidavit platforms and digital archives, which she said enhance transparency and speed in justice delivery.
Her address highlighted expanded judicial divisions, strengthened specialised courts and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, and continuous investment in capacity development for judicial personnel.
Support from Government and Legal Community
Represented by the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, the state government reiterated its commitment to a strong, independent judiciary. Salako-Oyedele urged judges to remain impartial and courageous in resolving election-related disputes and warned against partisan alignments that could undermine democracy.
A senior legal practitioner and guest speaker, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Moruf Ajibola, praised the judiciary’s achievements under Justice Dipeolu’s leadership, pointing to the expansion of judicial and magisterial divisions and the introduction of digital solutions.
The anniversary celebration also featured a novelty football match between judiciary staff and members of the Nigerian Bar Association, underscoring the institutional cross-section of legal practitioners and judicial officers in commemorating five decades of justice delivery.
