A major peace initiative aimed at tackling insecurity and fostering unity is underway across 19 northern Nigerian states and the Federal Capital Territory, as stakeholders intensify efforts to counter violence, rebuild community resilience, and strengthen conflict prevention mechanisms.

The 2026 Northern Nigeria Peace Campaign, launched in January by Global Peace Ambassador Zubairu Dalhatu Malami in partnership with civil society, traditional leaders, and peacebuilding institutions, seeks to address the complex roots of instability that have plagued the region. The campaignโ€™s scope spans community mobilisation, youth and women empowerment, engagement with traditional institutions, and technology-enabled early warning systems to prevent violence and promote cohesion.

Community Engagement and Institutional Support

The initiative brings together a network of partners, including the Africa Peace Reform Initiative (APRI), Global Peace Chain, AUDA-NEPAD Nigeria, and the federal Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR). Through courtesy visits to emirate councils and strategic dialogue with state governments, the campaign has laid groundwork for collaborative peace efforts in volatile areas such as Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, and Katsina states.

Peace advocates involved in the campaign say the strategy blends traditional conflict resolution approaches with modern advocacy tools, emphasising peace education, digital outreach, and community service drives targeted at vulnerable groups, particularly youth and women. Digital platforms are being used to counter misinformation and promote solidarity in the aftermath of violent incidents, including attacks like the bombs at Gamboru Market earlier this year.

Rising Security Challenges

The northern region continues to grapple with persistent security threats, from banditry and kidnappings to Islamist insurgencies. Recent reports of coordinated gunmen attacks in Niger State โ€” where at least 15 people were killed โ€” underscore the urgency of peacebuilding efforts.

Analysts say peace initiatives like the Northern Nigeria Peace Campaign arrive against a backdrop of heightened insecurity across various zones, with Nigeriaโ€™s northeastern and northwest regions earlier placed on alert due to regional and ideological threats linked to international conflicts.

Complementary Peace Efforts

The campaign aligns with broader security and peace agendas. For example, the European Union and Nigeria recently launched the first Peace, Security and Defence Dialogue, reinforcing international collaboration on counter-terrorism, conflict prevention, and law enforcement cooperation.

Locally, peace advocates have echoed calls for unity amid polarisation, as seen in recent events commemorating World Peace Day, where stakeholders emphasised the need to bridge social divides.

Looking Ahead

As the campaign progresses through 2026, organisers hope sustained engagement with traditional institutions, youth networks, and state authorities will translate into measurable reductions in violence and improved social cohesion. The initiativeโ€™s success could serve as a blueprint for peacebuilding in other conflict-affected regions of Nigeria.
