NAFDAC Alcohol Ban Controversy: Group Demands Sack of DG Adeyeye, Cites Economic and Legal Concerns

A civil society group has urged President Bola Tinubu to sack NAFDAC DG Mojisola Adeyeye over the enforcement of a sachet alcohol ban, citing legal violations, economic risks, and policy inconsistencies.
A civil society organisation, the Concerned Citizens Network, has called for the immediate dismissal of Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, Director General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), accusing her of administrative failure and misuse of office.
The demand was made on Wednesday in Abuja during a media briefing addressed by the group’s President, Ndubuisi Nwogu, who faulted the agency’s enforcement of restrictions on sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottled alcoholic drinks.
Allegations of Policy Breach and Disregard for Directives
Nwogu described the enforcement action as unlawful and insensitive, arguing that it contradicts provisions within the national alcohol policy endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Health. He further claimed that the move defies a presidential directive suspending further regulatory measures pending the outcome of a joint committee review.
The group also maintained that the agency’s action runs counter to a prior resolution of the House of Representatives, which had earlier urged restraint following consultations with industry stakeholders.
Economic Implications and Industry Concerns
According to the group, the enforcement of the ban could disrupt the economy, particularly within the alcohol production and distribution chain. It warned of potential job losses and adverse effects on small and medium-scale enterprises operating within the sector.
The organisation further raised concerns that restricting access to smaller, regulated alcohol packages may inadvertently fuel the circulation of illicit and unregulated products, while also diminishing government revenue streams.
Debate Over Public Health and Consumption Patterns
While acknowledging the importance of regulating harmful substances, the group argued that smaller alcohol packaging primarily serves low-income adult consumers and does not necessarily encourage abuse. It suggested that such packaging could even moderate consumption when compared to larger bottles.
The Concerned Citizens Network also challenged claims linking sachet alcohol to underage drinking, insisting that there is insufficient empirical evidence to support such assertions. It noted ongoing industry-led campaigns aimed at promoting responsible drinking and limiting access to minors.
Call for Presidential Intervention
Nwogu urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action by removing Adeyeye from office, stating that her continued leadership is no longer in the public interest.
As of the time of filing this report, NAFDAC had not issued an official response to the allegations.
