Militants Abduct Over 300 Residents in Borno Community
Abuja, Nigeria — Armed militants have abducted more than 300 residents, including women and children, during an attack on Ngoshe, a town in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, according to local officials.
The attack occurred late Friday when suspected Islamist insurgents stormed the community, forcing hundreds of residents from their homes and taking them away into surrounding bush areas. Local authorities said the victims included a large number of women and children.
A Gwoza area official, Bulama Sawa, confirmed the incident and suggested the assault may have been carried out in retaliation for recent military operations that reportedly killed three commanders linked to the Boko Haram insurgent group.
Renewed Security Concerns
The latest attack highlights the continuing security challenges in Nigeria’s northeast, where insurgent groups have operated for more than a decade. Borno State remains the epicentre of the conflict involving Boko Haram and factions linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Military authorities said several other communities — including Konduga, Marte, Jakana and Mainok — experienced attempted attacks earlier in the week. Security forces reportedly repelled those assaults, though casualties were recorded among troops during the operations.
Humanitarian Impact
Communities in the region have endured repeated attacks, kidnappings and displacement since the insurgency began in 2009, forcing millions of residents to flee their homes and rely on humanitarian assistance.
Security analysts say the continued raids on remote communities underscore the difficulties faced by Nigerian forces in securing rural areas across the vast northeastern terrain.
Authorities have yet to release an official figure for the number of abducted residents or provide details of ongoing rescue operations.
The attack is among the most significant abduction incidents reported in the region in recent months and is likely to intensify calls for strengthened security operations across Borno and neighbouring states.
