ADC Crisis Escalates as Court Voids Congresses, Orders Status Quo Pending Hearing
The Federal High Court has nullified ADC congresses nationwide and ordered parties to maintain the status quo, escalating the party’s leadership crisis ahead of a crucial hearing.
The leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has deepened following a ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which invalidated recent party congresses conducted across the country.
In its decision delivered on Tuesday, the court declared the congresses null and void pending the determination of a substantive suit challenging their legitimacy.
Order to Halt Convention, Maintain Status Quo
The court further directed a faction of the party reportedly aligned with former Senate President, David Mark, to suspend its planned national convention and all related activities.
Presiding over the matter, the judge ordered all parties involved in the dispute to maintain the status quo ante bellum until April 23, 2026, when the case is scheduled for further hearing.
The directive effectively freezes all actions within the party pending judicial clarification on the contentious processes.
Concerns Over Alleged Defiance of Court Order
Despite the subsisting order, reports indicate that the faction linked to Mark proceeded with certain party activities, raising concerns among observers and stakeholders about compliance with the judiciary.
Legal experts caution that any steps taken in violation of a valid court directive could be deemed legally ineffective. Such actions, they note, may ultimately be set aside by the courts.
INEC Oversight and Legitimacy Questions
Analysts have also pointed to the critical role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in validating party congresses and conventions. They warn that proceedings conducted without the commission’s oversight risk losing legal standing.
This development has added another layer of complexity to the crisis, with questions emerging over the legitimacy of decisions already taken by competing factions within the party.

Party members and political watchers have expressed concern that the escalating dispute could further weaken the ADC’s internal structure and erode public confidence in its leadership.
