Aiyedatiwa Receives Report on Upgrade of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic to University

The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has received the report on the proposed upgrade of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic to a university, describing the initiative as a strategic move to advance agriculture, science and technology in the state.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ebenezer Adeniyan.
Aiyedatiwa received the committee’s report on Monday at his office in Akure, outlining plans for the conversion of the institution into the proposed University of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Owo.
Commending the committee’s work, the governor noted that the report featured critical documents, including a campus master plan, academic brief, and sustainability framework.
“This work reflects a clear vision and meticulous planning. The calibre of experts involved and the depth of research conducted demonstrate that the proposed university has the potential to rank among the best in Nigeria,” he said.
The governor emphasised that the proposed upgrade aligns with broader national priorities, particularly in agriculture and rural development.
He highlighted the role of emerging technologies in driving growth, noting that artificial intelligence and innovation would be central to improving agricultural productivity and supporting sustainable livelihoods.
“Science and technology must underpin everything we do, including food production and wealth creation,” he added.
Aiyedatiwa also stressed the need for a well-managed transition process to safeguard the academic progress of current students while positioning the institution for future competitiveness.
“We must handle the transition carefully while preparing for a university that can compete at the national level,” he said.
Presenting the report, the committee chairman and Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Igbekele Ajibefun, said the proposal was driven by the growing demand for university education among young people.
“The objective is reflected in the proposed name, University of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Owo, which underscores our commitment to innovation, applied knowledge, and technological advancement,” he said.
Ajibefun explained that the proposed university would include faculties in key areas such as agriculture, engineering, computing, and social sciences, structured to meet both national and global development needs.
He added that a five-year development plan has been designed to ensure financial sustainability and continuity of academic activities, while a draft enabling law has been prepared for legislative consideration.
The state government reiterated its commitment to strengthening higher education and positioning the proposed institution as a competitive centre of learning in Nigeria.
