Three Dead, Five Rescued as Passenger Bus Plunges into River in Ibadan

Ibadan, Nigeria — Three people have lost their lives while five others were rescued after a passenger bus plunged into a river along Amuloko Road in Ibadan, Oyo State, emergency authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred when a Suzuki commercial bus carrying eight passengers reportedly lost control and crashed into the Ariyo River in the Amuloko area of the city.

Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Maroof Akinwande, said the agency received a distress call from a resident, Fadeke Yusuf, and immediately deployed rescue personnel to the scene.

According to him, emergency responders were able to rescue five passengers alive, while three bodies were recovered from the river after the crash. The survivors were taken to Ona-Ara Private Hospital in the Jegede area for medical treatment.

Akinwande added that the remains of the deceased victims were handed over to officers from the Ogbere Divisional Police Headquarters, led by ASP Aishat Ibrahim, for further investigation and necessary procedures.

Reckless Driving Blamed

The fire service chief attributed the accident to reckless driving, warning motorists to exercise caution and comply with road safety rules to prevent avoidable tragedies on the highways.

He also acknowledged the support provided by officials of the Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency (OYRTMA) and the Ona Ara Local Government authorities during the rescue operation.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns about road safety and driver discipline across Nigerian roads, where traffic accidents continue to claim lives.
