2027 Election: ADC Picks Rotimi Amaechi as Atiku Abubakar’ Running Mate
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election, describing the partnership as a national unity ticket.
ABUJA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has unveiled former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
The party announced that Amaechi will run alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who emerged as its presidential candidate, in what it described as a ticket designed to provide experienced leadership and national cohesion ahead of the next general election.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, following consultations with party leaders, coalition partners and stakeholders across the country.
According to the ADC, Amaechi’s selection followed his performance in the party’s presidential primary, where he emerged as the runner-up, as well as his extensive experience in public service at both state and federal levels.
The party said the Atiku-Amaechi ticket represents a blend of experience, political reach and administrative capacity aimed at addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic and governance challenges.
In the statement, the ADC highlighted Amaechi’s political career, noting that he served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly before becoming a two-term governor of Rivers State. The party also pointed to his tenure as Minister of Transportation, during which several rail and transportation projects were initiated and expanded.
The opposition party argued that Amaechi’s background in both the legislative and executive arms of government positions him as a valuable complement to Atiku’s leadership.
“The proposed partnership between Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance. It brings together two experienced political figures with the capacity and national outlook required to provide alternative leadership for Nigeria,” the statement said.
The ADC further stated that Amaechi’s political influence in the South-South region and his network across the country would strengthen the party’s appeal as it prepares for the 2027 election.
According to the party, the pairing reflects its effort to build a broad-based coalition capable of attracting support across regional, ethnic and political divides.
The ADC said the ticket would focus on issues such as economic recovery, job creation, national security, good governance and national unity, which it identified as major concerns for Nigerians.
The party also called on its members, coalition partners, civil society groups, youth organisations and women groups to rally behind the ticket as preparations intensify for the 2027 election cycle.
With the announcement, political attention is expected to shift toward how the ADC plans to consolidate support nationwide as the race for the presidency gradually gathers momentum.
