Appeal Court Ruling: ADC Accuses INEC of Bowing to Government Pressure

Abuja, Nigeria — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has faulted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its interpretation of a recent Court of Appeal ruling, accusing the electoral umpire of acting under political pressure and abandoning neutrality.
In a strongly worded statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party rejected INEC’s position, alleging that the commission’s stance reflects the influence of a government unsettled by the growing strength of opposition forces.
The ADC claimed that despite what it described as sustained attempts to weaken opposition parties, its rising political momentum has triggered anxiety within the ruling establishment.
According to the party, INEC’s interpretation of the appellate court’s decision is riddled with inconsistencies and fails to align with the facts.
“We reject INEC’s interpretation of the Court of Appeal ruling. We knew that INEC was being pressured by a government that has become jittery from the ADC’s rising momentum,” the statement read.
The party further described INEC’s position as contradictory, insisting that it would soon provide a detailed clarification to counter what it considers misleading conclusions drawn by the commission.
ADC also warned that the electoral body’s stance suggests it has taken sides in the political landscape, rather than maintaining its constitutional role as an impartial arbiter.
“INEC’s press statement is full of contradictions that fly in the face of both facts and reason. What is clear is that INEC has caved to pressure and has chosen to side with the government against the Nigerian people,” the party stated.
While refraining from immediate legal or political action, the opposition party said it is currently reviewing its options and will make its next steps known in due course.
It, however, called on its members and supporters across the country to remain calm and resolute as the situation unfolds.
“We are currently reviewing our options, and we shall make these known soon. Meanwhile, we call on our members and all Nigerians to remain steadfast as they await further directives,” the statement added.
The ADC concluded by reaffirming its confidence in its growing political base, declaring that both the party and the nation are on a path of resurgence.
The development comes amid intensifying political activities and shifting alliances ahead of future electoral contests, with opposition parties increasingly asserting their presence on the national stage.
