Tinubu Approves Posting of Nigerian Ambassadors to 65 Countries

Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the posting of 65 Nigerian ambassadors and high commissioners to diplomatic missions across the world, including the United Nations, marking a major step in restoring Nigeria’s full diplomatic representation abroad.

According to a statement from the Presidency, the deployment covers 31 career diplomats and 34 non-career ambassadors whose nominations had earlier been confirmed by the Senate in December.

The announcement signals the Federal Government’s effort to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement and representation in key global capitals after several months of vacancies in foreign missions.

Diplomatic Postings Across Strategic Missions

Among the newly posted non-career ambassadors are several prominent political figures and former public officials assigned to key countries.

They include former presidential aide Reno Omokri to Mexico, former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode to Germany, businessman Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and former interior minister Abdulrahman Dambazau to China.

Other postings include Lateef Kayode Are to the United States, Isaak Adewole to Canada, Olufemi Pedro to Australia, and Nora Daduut to South Korea.

Career diplomats were also deployed to several African and international missions, including Egypt, Ghana, India, Belgium, Switzerland, Morocco, Kenya, and Senegal, among others.

Diplomatic Clearance Process Begins

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has begun transmitting the names of the envoys to their respective host countries to obtain agrément — the formal diplomatic approval required before ambassadors can assume duty.

So far, the United Kingdom has approved Aminu Dalhatu as Nigeria’s High Commissioner, while France has granted diplomatic clearance for Ayo Oke to serve as ambassador.

Induction Programme for Envoys

President Tinubu has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to commence orientation and induction programmes for the ambassadors-designate to prepare them for their diplomatic assignments.

The deployment is expected to reinvigorate Nigeria’s diplomatic presence and advance the country’s interests in international relations, trade diplomacy, security cooperation, and multilateral engagement.

The appointments also come nearly three years after the federal government recalled ambassadors appointed by the previous administration, leaving many Nigerian missions without substantive envoys.
