FG Declares March 19–20 Public Holidays for Eid-el-Fitr Celebration

Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Government has officially declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays nationwide to mark the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr, the festival that concludes the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
The declaration was made by Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued on Tuesday, and communicated to the public via the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
In his message, the minister congratulated Muslim faithful for successfully completing the Ramadan fast and urged them to continue practicing the principles of love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice that underpin the holy month.
He also called on all Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for peace, national unity, and the continued prosperity of the country.
“While celebrating, we encourage citizens to act responsibly, extend kindness to the less privileged, and uphold the values that strengthen our social cohesion,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
The ministry reiterated the government’s commitment to national unity and peaceful coexistence, emphasizing that the holiday provides an opportunity for reflection, community engagement, and family gatherings.
